JROTC Trip to Washington, D. C. 2015 – Through alumni donations and contacts raised a considerable amount of the funding needed for eleven cadets and sponsors to take a four day trip to Washington, D. C. during the Presidents Day Holiday. Cadets participated in fund raising activities on the weekends. The trip included a visit to the White House, Congressman’s Office in the Rayburn Building, Capitol Building, Pentagon, Mount Vernon, Arlington Cemetery, Monuments, Air and Space Museum and various other attractions. The group stayed at Wainwright Hall at Fort Myer. It was a very exciting and educational experience for all cadets fortunate enough to qualify to make the trip.

JROTC Cadet Drill Camp 2016 – Funded the Drill Camp for cadets – brought in three of the top drill instructors in the country for a 2 ½ day camp during the summer.

Lt. General Tome Walters (Retired) – Visit to Fair Park High School – In the Spring of 2016 the Alumni Association invited Lt. General Tome Walters to return to Fair Park for a visit and to address the current JROTC cadets. Lt. General Walters was in the Fair Park Class of 1965 and served as battalion commander that year. From Fair Park, Walters went to Louisiana Tech, the Air Force Academy and had an illustrious career in the United States Air Force. This was the first visit back to the Fair Park campus for Walters since his graduation. Lt. General Walters was accompanied by his wife, a 1965 graduate of Byrd High School. During the visit, the Alumni Association hosted a luncheon to honor Lt. General Walters and Mrs. Walters. Attending was Col. Lo Walker (Retired), Fair Park graduate and current Mayor of Bossier City, Louisiana. Other guests at the luncheon were Fair Park graduate and writer for the Shreveport Times, Maggie Martin, current PTSA president, JROTC cadet leadership and alumni.

Throughout the day, cadets were inspired and encouraged by Lt. General Walters’ remarks and appreciated him and his wife taking the time to return to Shreveport and the Fair Park campus. Our sincere thanks to everyone involved in making this day possible for our cadets.

SEED Project - The summer of 2015, we had the opportunity to partner with Dr. Brian Salvatore, Professor of Chemistry, Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) and the American Chemical Society (ACS) to offer two Fair Park students the chance to participate in the SEED Program.

The SEED Program is a summer research internship program for economically disadvantaged high school students. The program opens doors for students to see what it is like to be a chemist. The students must be entering their junior or senior year of high school, have an interest in a career in chemistry, etc. The students worked alongside a scientist-mentor, on a chemistry research project. At the completion of their summer work, each student received a fellowship award of $2,500. with the possibility of returning for the second summer. The second summer the student will receive $3,000. For their work. The students may be eligible for a grant to travel to present their research at an ACS meeting. There is also the possibility the students will receive a $5,000. college scholarship.

Two Fair Park High School students worked with Dr. Salvatore in the laboratory at LSUS the summer of 2015. The title of their research is Synthesis of Novel Polyphenol Cancer Therapeutics.

One student returned to work with Dr. Salvatore the summer of 2016, completed her work and is now applying for the $5,000.00 college scholarship in the field of chemistry.

In 2012, the Fair Park High School Alumni Association initiated contact with the Cyber Innovation Center to bring a Cyber Science Course and a Stem (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Physics Course to Fair Park. In the summer of 2012, the Cyber Innovation Center provided professional development for five Fair Park teachers. The training for the cyber and physics courses was held at Louisiana Tech University. In addition, the Cyber Innovation Center is providing supplies and equipment to Fair Park for these courses. There are plans to expand this program with additional cyber courses as programs are developed. In July 2013, two teachers were cross-trained in Cyber Science. There is no cost to the Caddo Parish School Board or Fair Park. Currently, not being used at school.

In 2012, the Fair Park High School Alumni Association initiated contact with Bossier Parish Community College to bring their Pharmacy Tech Course to the Fair Park Medical Careers Magnet Program. BPCC provide the instructor, textbooks, and supplies for the course. On completion of this dual enrollment course, students would earn six hours of college credit and qualify to work in a pharmacy. On completion of 400 hours of paid pharmacy work students would qualify for their pharmacy tech license test. Funding for the program is provided by Bossier Parish Community College at no cost to Caddo Parish or Fair Park. Currently, not being used. The Medical Careers Magnet Program, started in 1982, was discontinued by the Caddo Parish school system at Fair Park in May 2016.

Guitars: The Association contacted James Burton and secured a donation of 50 guitars as a gift from Mr. Burton. The school system planned to provide cases for the guitars and a program to not only teach the students to play the guitars but learn to write music. An itinerant teacher was to be provided by the parish. A week before delivery of the guitars the program was cancelled by the principal at the time. An excellent opportunity lost for our students.

Amazing Shake Competition – Alumni Association prepared the Students for the Competition – 2015, 2016 - Amazing Shake is a competition for students the Transformation Zone schools (the Transformation Zone is composed of ten schools in Caddo Parish that have been academically unacceptable for a number of years). The Amazing Shake competition is based on Ron Clark’s Essential 55. The purpose of the Amazing Shake is to change the climate and culture in the ten schools by developing good leadership skills in the students and developing their social, etiquette, and communication skills.

Ten students were selected from each school and training sessions at the schools were conducted honing the students’ skills in the art of conversation and communication. The first competition was held in February at the Louisiana Tower in downtown Shreveport. The ten students met a group of community leaders and were graded on their skills. After the first round of competition, the field was narrowed to five students from each school.

The next step for the students was an etiquette class. The lessons were conducted at the Caddo School Board Office in early March.

The next competition was a gathering of five students from each of the ten schools with a group of attorneys. Again, the meeting took place at the Louisiana Tower. All students were very engaged in conversations and practiced their social skills. From this meeting, two finalist were selected from each school.

In late March, a bus tour of area citizens visited the Fair Park High School campus to see the improvements made at the school since becoming a part of the Transformation Zone. Greeting our visitors were members of the Fair Park Amazing Shake team. The students not only greeted the guests but conducted a tour of the school, visiting classrooms and other areas of the building. The guests were very impressed with our school, students, and our Amazing Shake students.

The next stop in the round of competition for the Amazing Shake students was a visit to the KTAL studio, as guest on the KTAL morning show. Students were asked to read from a teleprompter and record a short commercial. The field was narrowed to a single winner of the Amazing Shake competition from Fair Park.

In late May, there were several other opportunities for our Amazing Shake student. These opportunities include a presidential type speech, emcee an event, and introduce an act from Fair Park at a Transformation Zone talent show.

All would agree that the Amazing Shake has been a wonderful learning experience, building the self-confidence and knowledge of the students and helping to changing the climate and culture of our school.

We are looking forward to more Amazing Shake events in the next school year.
